How Do You Keep Artificial Grass Clean with Dogs?

How To Maintain Your Artificial Grass With Dogs - texasturf 2

Dealing with mess is a natural part of life with an adorable furry friend. That said, it’s easier to manage that mess when you have artificial grass for dogs versus a natural lawn. Your pets can dig, play, and potty without destroying the lawn or leaving lasting stains and smells.

All it takes is some simple maintenance for pet turf to remain fresh, clean, and in great shape for many years– we share some great tips below.

How to Clean Artificial Grass for Dogs: 3-Step Process

Keeping an artificial lawn clean with pets involves three main steps:

• Rinsing

• Disinfecting

• Spot Cleaning as Needed

The most vital part of the process is regular rinsing. Simply spraying down the area with your garden hose washes away most loose debris. Doing this weekly prevents the accumulation of odors, bacteria, and stains over time.

You’ll also want to disinfect the turf once a month or more often if you have multiple pets. There are several effective pet-safe cleaners for artificial grass available at local stores. Check that the product explicitly states “safe for pets” before using it. Apply the cleaner with a sprayer across all high-traffic areas of the lawn. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes before rinsing clean.

For stubborn stains or smells, mix warm water and white vinegar in a spray bottle for easy spot treatment. Spritz the affected patches, allow 20 minutes of contact time, brush gently and rinse. The vinegar naturally cuts through residue without harsh chemicals.

Controlling Bacteria Build-Up on Pet Turf

The porous nature of natural grass allows urine and fecal matter to sink down to the soil, creating an optimal environment for bacteria to multiply. Runoff from rain or sprinklers then spreads the bacteria across the rest of the lawn.

With artificial turf, liquids drain through the backing instead of accumulating at the base. This drainage prevents excessive bacterial growth within the material itself. Still, waste leftovers on the surface could breed bacteria if not removed promptly.

Following regular disinfection methods  kills most microbes and controls odors. But if you notice excessive bacterial build-up (often in the form of stinky smells), you likely need more frequent cleaning.

There are also specialized antimicrobial treatments for artificial grass that provide longer-lasting protection when applied quarterly– we’d love to share our favorite products during your free consultation.
